The terrible death of a 20-year-old woman who was hit and dragged for a few kilometres by a car on Sunday morning in the capital’s Sultanpuri neighbourhood has sparked widespread indignation.

After deceased Anjali’s friend, Nidhi on Wednesday claimed that she was drunk while driving the scooter, the victim’s family on Thursday lashed out at her and stated that they have never met her in person till now.

“I don’t know Nidhi, I have never seen her. Anjali never used to drink, she never came home in an inebriated state, and we don’t believe whatever claims Nidhi made,” Rekha, Anjali’s mother said.

Speaking with ANI, Anjali’s maternal uncle said: “Nidhi & her family should have informed police about the incident. Nidhi should be interrogated. She too is involved. We demand CBI enquiry in the case, it isn’t small case, it’s a painful incident.”

Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal on Wednesday slammed Nidhi, deceased Anjali’s friend who was with her on the night of the horrific accident, for repeatedly defaming the 20-year-old victim.

In a video, Maliwal questioned Nidhi on why she had kept silent till the police traced her on the basis of footage from CCTV cameras.

She said, “Anjali’s friend has put the blame on her. She was with Anjali when the accident happened. She left the spot and went home. Didn’t she feel the need to inform (the) police or Anjali’s family about what had happened?

“She could have followed the car that was dragging Anjali, who must have been crying for help. She could have done something so that Anjali’s life could have been saved. What kind of friend is she?,” Maliwal said.

The investigation into the event is underway, and Special CP Shalini Singh on Wednesday stated that are Delhi Police is examining every angle regarding the case, and will send the report to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs once the probe is completed.
