Sonia Gandhi, former Congress president, was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Wednesday for a routine check-up. Gandhi has been suffering from a respiratory infection for some time now. She was accompanied to the hospital by her daughter, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Dr Ajay Swaroop, Chairman (Board of Management), Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said: “UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi was admitted to our hospital today. She was admitted to the Department of Chest Medicine for observation and treatment of a viral respiratory infection.”
The Congress’ Bharat Jodo Yatra resumed its journey at 6 am on Wednesday, after stopping for the night at Mavikalan in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat.
Sonia Gandhi fell ill on Tuesday, prompting her and Priyanka to return to Delhi after participating in the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Priyanka Gandhi did not join the Yatra when it resumed on Wednesday morning. She is expected to join later in the day.
Congress leader and Sonia’s son Rahul Gandhi was present at the Yatra’s resumption and was accompanied by other senior Congress leaders, including former Union minister Jairam Ramesh and the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit chief, Brijlal Khabri. Local leaders and activists, including district unit chief Rampal Dhama of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), an alliance partner of the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, also joined the yatra.
The Congress had previously announced that RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary would participate in the yatra, but Chaudhary was reportedly abroad and unable to attend.
Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reached Mavikalan from Delhi before the yatra’s resumption, said Anshu Awasthi, spokesperson for the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit.
As Rahul Gandhi, sporting a white T-shirt, resumed the UP leg of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, scores of people carrying the Tricolor joined him.
