As Russia’s invasion in Ukraine nears a year’s completion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his New Year address said that his country will fight the invasion until victorious and paid tribute to all those taking part in the war effort. “We fight and will continue to fight. For the sake of the main word: ‘victory’,” he was quoted as saying by news agency Reuters.
Hours after Ukraine suffered Russian missile attacks, Zelenskyy remained defiant in an emotional speech in which he heaped praise on all those people involved in the war in Ukraine.
“I want to say to all of you: Ukrainians, you are incredible! See what we have done and what we are doing!
“How our soldiers have been smashing this ‘second army of the world’ since the first days.
“How our people stopped their equipment and infantry columns…
“There are no small matters in a great war,” Zelensky added.
“There are no unnecessary ones. Each of us is a fighter. Each of us is a front. Each of us is the basis of the defense.
“We fight as one team — the whole country, all our regions. I admire you all. I want to thank every invincible region of Ukraine.”
Russian airstrikes attacked many parts of Ukraine on Saturday, including the capital Kyiv, where at least one person was killed and several others were injured, reported the news agency.
An AFP journalist said that 11 loud blasts were heard in the early afternoon.
As per the report, Ukraine’s air defence knocked down 12 of Russia’s 20 missiles.
“According to preliminary information, one person died in the Solomianskyi district. Several people were injured,” Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said on social media. Attacks were also reported by local officials in the southern Mykolaiv region and the Khmelnytskyi region in the west.
Several senior Ukrainian officials have mentioned the strikes in social media posts, stressing that Russia will not be able to disrupt their festivities. On Facebook, Mykolaiv Governor Vitaly Kim stated that Russian missile launches had been detected.
On Telegram, Deputy Presidential Chief of Staff Kyrylo Tymoshenko stated that a hotel had been damaged. Across the country, air defence has been activated. A drone attack in the western city of Khmelnytskyi harmed two persons, according to a Ukrainian official.
